The fruit fly is an important organism in genetic and development biology studies. It has a short life cycle which facilitates diverse tests and experiments with different substances because it has a 75% homology with the genes that cause human diseases. In order to evaluate the effect of cigarette smoke on the Drosophila melanogaster life cycle, growth mediums with banana, distilled water and nystatin were used on the experimental control group. Three treatments (one, two and three puffs) were carried out, with three cigarette brands (Derby, Green and Red Marlboro) until the fifth generation with three repetitions each, and finally, polythene chromosome assemblages of third-stage larvae were made.As result, there was an increase in mortality rate and life-cycle duration, a decrease in egg posture, as well as a significant effect of generation (p-value <0.00001), cigarette brand (p-value = 0.0017) and treatment (p-value <0.00001), and a delayed oviposition with the Derby cigarette brand, which presented more phenotype alterations.
